Dubai : A fine of Dh42,000 in five minutes. That's the penalty a Schumacher-wanna-be in Dubai was slapped with as he zoomed past speed radars in his sports car on Shaikh Zayed Road, a local daily reported on Wednesday.
Twelve traffic police cameras flashed the Emirati driver, who was not identified, as he clocked a speed of 180km/h, exceeding the 120km/h speed limit by 60km/h, according to Arabic daily Emarat Al Youm.
Upon being notified of his shocking offences, the man begged for a fine reduction, saying his car was driven by a friend from another Gulf country. The police were not impressed and promptly impounded his car for 300 days.
Last month, a 30-year-old Emirati woman paid Dh146,000 in fines accumulated over 18 months, most for speeding.
Meanwhile, traffic police said they will seize cars of those who accumulate fines of Dh5,000 or more in a year. Until October, they had collected Dh386,370,585 in traffic fines from individuals and others in Dubai.
